The weather in Toronto is well known. Due to strong winds and large snowstorms, your home’s roof suffers damage every day of the year. And it’s rare to be able to foresee when bad weather may affect your house. Consequently, what should you do if you think your roof may have been damaged? It’s crucial to know exactly what to do if your home’s roof sustains damage so that you can proceed properly.

Follow these tips on what to do after storm damage occurs to your home to keep up with the demands of the winter season:

1. Determine the extent of the damage

Finding the damage is the first thing to do after a severe storm.  Analyze the roof for signs of damage such as water spots on the ceiling, tucked or missing roof shingles, and dents in asphalt shingles. Observe any loose or peeling sealant near those same penetration points. Examine for water damage in the attic or along the ceiling as well. Document any visible or exposed materials. Take note of the material’s shades and approximate shade.

2. Make Temporary fixes

Interior property can be damaged by leaking water if the roof is severely damaged in an area directly above a living space. If storm damage has caused active leaks, cover the roofing with a tarp to provide emergency protection. However, keep in mind that this is only a temporary solution until professional roofers arrive.

3. Consult your insurance provider

Assess the extent of the damage to determine whether it qualifies for coverage under your home insurance policy or whether it would be more cost-effective to engage a contractor directly to do the repairs. Keep a record of all the valuables that were damaged by the storm while keeping your insurance policy close to hand. Take pictures of the damage and be prepared to show them to your insurance provider. Additionally, after receiving a quote from your roofing contractor, speak with your insurance agent to find out what is and is not covered by your policy.

4. Contact a professional roofing Contractor

Even though your industrial roofing system appears to be in good condition, you should leave the inspection to the professionals.  Professional industrial roofers will guarantee that no damage goes unnoticed, even if it is unnoticeable to the untrained eye. Both your insurance agent and a qualified roofing contractor will want information from one another in order to assess the damage and produce a cost estimate for your insurance claim, regardless of whether you call one first or the other. The list of all damaged components must therefore be available.

5. Ensure future safety

It is obvious to inspect the condition of your property’s exterior roofing, but it’s also crucial to search for symptoms within your home. Look for any indications of water damage on the walls, such as spots that are discoloured or ceiling stains that are caused by water. Also verify the effects of the storm on your flooring, furnishings, and appliances.
