Choosing the right roofing material for your replacement is a big decision. You must conduct extensive study and absorb a large amount of information in order to select the best one for your individual scenario.   When it comes to roofing materials, there are numerous alternatives.

The most difficult aspect of making this major decision is undoubtedly the research. There is so much information available that it is almost daunting.  Wouldn’t it be fantastic to have all of the different types of roofing materials and how to choose the best one for you in one place? If you answered yes, you’ve come to the correct place.

This article begins by outlining the main five types of roofing materials and providing the a little context on each, along with their pros and cons:

  1. Asphalt shingles: In Ontario, asphalt shingles are the most used type of roofing material. They are a common option for homes because they are inexpensive and simple to install. 3-tab, dimensional, and luxury asphalt shingles are the different varieties. Although 3-tab shingles used to rule the market, dimensional shingles are now the most popular kind used to cover roofs. Although they cost almost twice as much, luxury-style shingles are just as aggressively marketed as dimensional ones.  They may not fare as well in harsh weather conditions and have a shorter lifespan than other materials.
  2. Metal roofing: Metal roofing is a well-liked option for commercial and industrial structures since it is strong and long-lasting. Due to its energy efficiency and aesthetic appeal, it is also growing in popularity for residential applications. Metal roofing, however, can be pricey and may need to be professionally installed. Metal roofing material options offer a variety of design options that let you have the different looks of shingles, slate, tile, shakes, or vertical panels. But in order to comply with strict requirements for wind, fire, and impact resistance rating, you must ensure that the metal product is tested, labelled, and listed with a testing organization. Please keep in mind that local building code requirements, manufacturer guidelines, and geographic location can all affect how metal roofing is installed.
  3. Clay tiles: Mediterranean-style homes and other residences with a Spanish or Southwestern flair frequently use clay tiles. Clay tiles are the best option for long-term application because they can endure well over 100 years with proper installation and upkeep. You can be confident that once clay tiles are laid, they will last for a very long time because they are completely resistant to rot, decay, insects, water damage, and mold. However, they can be expensive, heavy, and may need additional support.
  4. Slate : Natural stone slate is frequently utilized on old or upscale homes. It is strong and, with proper care, can live more than 100 years. The primary components of a slate roof, which is a high-end roofing system, are natural slate tiles and other slate roofing materials. Slate is mined and then cut into square tiles. Unlike other roofing materials that come in 3-foot wide strips or metal panels, slate tiles individually must be put one at a time. This makes the procedure of replacing your old roof with a new slate roof highly time-consuming and expensive. Additionally, due to the weight of the slate tiles, your home must be constructed, framed, or renovated to support their weight.
  5. Wood shakes and shingles: Choosing wood roofing for a home can be a lovely and distinctive decision. It is an environmentally friendly choice because it is renewable and biodegradable. However, it is vulnerable to rot, mold, and insect damage, and it might not withstand harsh weather as well.
  6. Synthetic roofing: Last in the list is Synthetic roofing. Because of their durability and energy efficiency, synthetic roofing materials like plastic or rubber are growing in popularity. They can imitate the appearance of other materials like slate or wood while also offering other advantages like resistance against damage from fire and hail. They might not be as aesthetically beautiful as natural materials, though, and they can be pricey.
